Gawadar Port will generate 10 billion annually: Chairman CPEC Authority
Chairman CPEC Authority Lieutenant General (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa while stressing the importance of Gawadar Port said that Gawadar Port and Gwadar Free Zone will generate 10 billion annually once it becomes fully operational.
Talking to media after reviewing various projects of CPEC in Gwadar, Asim Saleem Bajwa said that after the completion of Gawadar Free Zone and Gawadar Port, a lot of manufacturing and commercial activities will take place, resulting in transhipment.
He further said that CPEC Authority would continue to monitor on going development works in Gwadar till all the projects become fully operational.
Chairman CPEC Authority disclosed that China Port Holding Company has completed the infrastructure work at Gawadar Port at a cost of Rs 300 million and now all its four vessels are operational.
Over the past few months, the port of Gawadar has handled more than 67,000 metric tons of cargo, mostly remittances under the Afghan Transit Trade Agreement, which was relocated to Afghanistan.
A vessel of 8,000 cubic feet of liquefied petroleum gas will dock at Gawadar port today, after which another ship from Australia will bring 24,000 metric tons of diammonium phosphate fertilizer and feed cargo to Afghanistan.
The development work of the first phase of Gawadar Free Zone, covering an area of 60 acres, has also been completed. 47 companies have been registered and 6 factories have been built there while 6 more factories are under construction.
During the last three years, 1200 direct jobs have been created in Gawadar Port and Gawadar Free Zone and more than 1,200 people have been indirectly employed.
Chairman CPEC Authority disclosed that Prime Minister Imran Khan would soon lay the foundation stone of the second phase of development work of Gawadar Port Free Zone which is spread over an area of 2,221 acres.
China Port Holding Company has found an investor for the second phase of the free zone. The investor has already pledged 3 billion in direct investment in a single industry that will be built on 1,600 acres and create 30,000 jobs.
Development work on Gawadar Airport will be completed soon while technical and professional institutes will be inaugurated in the city in October this year.
A 150-bed hospital is also under construction in Gawadar. The hospital was gifted to the locals by the Chinese president.
The Chairman CPEC Authority concluded that the Gawadar City Master Plan has also been approved and is now in the process of implementation.
